Blair Mountain, a crucial site of labor history, is being threatened by the disastrous process of Mountain Top Removal. People from around the country are marching in early June to raise awareness and save the mountain.

Here's something the history books left out: In 1921, more than 10,000 West Virginia coal miners rose up in resistance to coal companies who refused to allow miners to unionize. It was the largest armed insurrection in the United States since the Civil War. This uprising, which took place in Logan County, West Virginia, is known as the Battle of Blair Mountain. The miners were met with a private army of police funded by coal companies, who employed, among other things, World War One planes to drop bombs and gas.

This piece maps out the cover which Fox's Gasland gives to corrupt politicians (see link re. Rep. Hinchey's wife) and corporate 'enviros' (see the section on their conflicts of interest with fossil fuel industry and more). Very useful for serious grassroots activists. Although there was a New York City premiere of the movie about a month ago, the film continues to tour and premiere in cities across the country and is a likely candidate for a Best Documentary Oscar.
